Introduction:
So, I was bored today. Its Summer Break, nobody was online for like, 6 hours D: . Hope that explains why I went a little in depth in some places.

Witch Doctor is one of the most flexible classes in the game. The possibilities are nearly endless, and only limited by your creativity and stat/skill points. This guide will give some insight into this amazing class, and give you several tips to perfect your very own Witch Doctor build. Begin by looking at the table of contents to see what you need. Next to each entry will be a search number. Hold Ctrl(Control) and press the F key, and enter this search number to find what you need. Depending on your browser, you may have to click "next" or "find more results" until it actually gets to the section you want.

CAUTION: The following is over 5,000 words long. If you don't want to read an essay, please use the table of contents to read only what you want to read. Sorry to anyone that gets eye-strain >.< .

Skill Descriptions: - 1.0
Below are all the Witch Doctor skills. Each skill includes a description, tips, and requirements.

Poisoning Skills: - 1.1

Agony Bug:
Geared Towards: Physical and attack speed builds
Damage Base: Normal attack damage and magic damage
Cast Cost: 1x Voodoo Poison Bug and MP
Poison: None
Effect: Target receives X% extra damage from fixed attacks (Souleater Bug) and normal attacks.
Comments: This skill is optional, and is obtained for free as a level 10 Witch Doctor. The main reason to get this skill is not for the damage, but for the enemy debuff. On an attack speed based build, this will increase your damage by quite a lot.

Bloodthirsty Bug:
Geared Towards: DPS and physical builds
Damage Base: Normal attack damage and magic damage
Cast Cost: 1x Voodoo Poison Bug and MP
Poison: Strong poison for 10 seconds
Effect: Poisons target, no side effects
Comments: This skill again is optional, and is mainly geared towards physical builds. The poison duration is not that great, meaning DPS builds cannot fully use this effectively. If you're getting this, it is mainly for just dealing damage.

Toxic-Detonating Bug:
Geared Towards: DPS builds
Damage Base: Poisons on the targeted opponent
Cast Cost: 1x Voodoo Poison Bug and MP
Effect: Turns X% of the poisons on the enemy into instant damage. For example, if you used Poison Strike on the opponent and then use Toxic-Detonating Bug, this skill will turn 40% of the poisons into damage. Targets with no poisons will give you 2 or more Poisons which can be used on other Witch Doctor skills.
Comments: This is a great option for DPS builds. Great in combination with Stalling Poison or Hundred Step Poison.

Poison-Purifying Bug:
Geared Towards: PvP or just collecting Poisons
Damage Base: No damage
Cast Cost: 1x Voodoo Poison Bug and MP
Effect: Turns X% of the poisons on a target (any person or even pets) into HP. If used on a target with no poisons, you obtain 4+ Poisons for use on other Witch Doctor Skills.
Comments: This skill is a must have if you are not getting Toxic-Detonating Bug and plan on using skills which need Poisons to activate, such as Hundred Step Poison. You can use this on your pet if you don't want to remove your buffs, as this skill will remove the effects of Blood Boil.

Sanctuary Scarab:
Geared Towards: All builds, especially AoE based
Damage Base: No damage
Cast Cost: 1x Voodoo Poison Bug and MP
Effect: Creates a fairly large field where you and team members can restore HP and MP while sitting. Lasts for 5 minutes.
Comments: This is great for lower levels that don't have Inner Magic or another MP recovery skill. I can imagine it also being useful at higher level places such as Flying Noisy Snakes where you sit between spawns. In parties, this is even more useful as now your team members can join in on the fun. The best thing about this skill has to be though that each level only costs 1 skill point.

Explosive Bug:
Geared Towards: Magic or physical based builds
Damage Base: Attack and Magic Attack
Cast Cost: 1x Voodoo Poison Bug and MP
Effect: Deals magic and physical damage on the target.
Comments: This is mainly for skill spammers as a damaging skill. It doesn't do anything other than deal damage to a target. Must get Agony Bug to level 5 to get this skill.

Souleater Bug:
Geared Towards: Magic or physical based builds
Damage Base: Fixed damage
Cast Cost: 1x Voodoo Poison Bug and MP
Effect: Deals fixed HP and MP damage. Also reduces target's Magic Attack for 20 seconds.
Comments: This is good for skill spammers, but also works for attack speed users in combination with Agony Bug. This also has some possibilities in PvP. Must get Bloodthirsty Bug to level 5 to get this skill.

Plant Summoning Bug:
Geared Towards: Anyone who wants a Summon Bug
Damage Base: None
Cast Cost: Poisons and MP
Effect: Use X Poisons on yourself or a team member. After 5 minutes, use the skill again. Instead of using poisons, you will use a Debugging Knife. If the host gained the a certain amount of XP or more, you gain 6+ Summon Bugs. If the host didn't get the required XP, you obtain only half of the max number of Summon Bugs.
Comments: This skill costs 6 skill points at level 1, and then 1 point for each additional level. Personally, I don't see much reason in getting higher levels since all you'll be doing is saving money on Debugging Knives. Summons will be talked about in greater detail later.

Plant Puppet Bug:
Geared Towards: Anyone who wants a Puppet Bug
Damage Base: None
Cast Cost: Poisons and MP
Effect: Use X Poisons on yourself or a team member. After 5 minutes, use the skill again. Instead of using poisons, you will use a Debugging Knife. If the host gained the a certain amount of XP or more, you gain 6+ Puppet Bugs. If the host didn't get the required XP, you obtain only half of the max number of Puppet Bugs.
Comments: This skill costs 6 skill points at level 1, and then 1 point for erach additional level. Like with Plant Summoning Bug, I don't see much use in getting this higher level than 1. Puppet Bugs will be talked about in greater detail later.

Plant Skill Bug:
Geared Towards: Anyone who wants a Skill Bug
Damage Base: None
Cast Cost: Poisons and MP
Effect: Use X Poisons on yourself or a team member. After 5 minutes, use the skill again. Instead of using poisons, you will use a Debugging Knife. If the host gained the a certain amount of XP or more, you gain 6+ Skill Bugs. If the host didn't get the required XP, you obtain only half of the max number of Skill Bugs.
Comments: This skill costs 6 skill points at level 1, and then 1 point for erach additional level. Like with Plant Summoning Bug and Plant Puppet Bug, I don't see much use in getting this higher level than 1. Skill Bugs will be talked about in greater detail later.

Blood Curse Poison: - 1.2

Liquid Venom:
Geared Towards: Magic based
Damage Base: Magic Attack
Cast Cost: MP only
Effect: Deals magic damage to the target and poisons for 20 seconds.
Comments: This skill can be subbed on other classes without the need to get the Witch Doctor equip. It can be used in combination with Toxic-Detonating Bug, but is more useful for magic based builds as a damaging attack.

Poison Strike:
Geared Towards: Physical based
Damage Base: Attack
Cast Cost: MP only
Effect: Deals physical damage to the target and poisons for 20 seconds.
Comments: This skill is a physical version of Liquid Venom, and is the same in every aspect, with the exception of its damage base.

Stalling Poison:
Geared Towards: Magic, DPS, physical based
Damage Base: None
Cast Cost: MP only
Effect: Poisons target for one minute, and also reduces their movement speed for one minute by X%.
Comments: Best when used in combination with Toxic-Detonating Bug. The secondary use for this is for a reduction in movement speed, which lasts for quite some time. This is great for Magic users which require range, as it will result in less running around. The same can go for physical based builds, but most of these builds focus on short range or attack speed.

Blood Boil:
Geared Towards: Everyone
Damage Base: None
Cast Cost: MP only
Effect: Boosts Attack, Magic Attack and sitting HP recovery, but poisons self for some HP while standing. Stacks 5 times and is removed by Poison-Purifying Bug.
Comments: This is great for anyone, and can be subbed on any class without the Witch Doctor equip. The best thing about this is it stacks 5 times, meaning you get 5x the effect. This skill can also block weaker poisons, for example, from Iron Hedgehogs in Foggy Forest. Great for everyone.

Martial Hex:
Geared Towards: Attack speed based
Damage Base: None
Cast Cost: MP and HP
Effect: Boosts normal attack damage but healing effects are reduced.
Comments: A must have for attack speed builds. This greatly increases your damage output.

Poison Fog:
Geared Towards: AoE based
Damage Base: Magic Attack
Cast Cost: MP
Effect: Deals magic damage to surrounding opponents and also poisons opponents nearby for 20 seconds.
Comments: Mainly for AoE builds. Must get Liquid Venom to level 5 to get this skill.

Poisoned Needles:
Geared Towards: AoE based
Damage Base: Attack
Cast Cost: MP
Effect: Deals physical damage to surrounding opponents and also poisons opponents nearby for 20 seconds.
Comments: Mainly for AoE builds. Identical to Poison Fog, with the exception of Damage Base.

Hundred Step Poison:
Geared Towards: DPS based
Damage Base: None
Cast Cost: MP and Poisons
Effect: Poisons enemy for 25 seconds.
Comments: This is Witch Doctor's strongest poison, but the duration isn't that great. It can still be effective when used with Toxic-Detonating Bug, however.

Poisonous Blood:
Geared Towards: AoE based
Damage Base: None
Cast Cost: Poison and MP
Effect: Poisons yourself for 150 seconds and surrounding opponents for 30 seconds.
Comments: Another attack for the AoE build. You may find it very useful to use Poison-Purifying Bug on yourself.

Withered Earth:
Geared Towards: Everyone, mainly AoE based
Damage Base: None
Cast Cost: MP, HP and a Debugging Knife
Effect: Creates a field where enemies receive X% additional damage from you, and your teammates. Lasts 5 minutes.
Comments: This is great in AoE parties, but also can be useful for soloers. A debuff which increases your damage can only be useful. The only downside to this is it does use up your Debugging Knives, so you'll have to buy a lot.

Voodoo Magic: - 1.3

Use Poison Insect and Poison:
Geared Towards: Subbed Witch Doctor
Damage Base: None
Cast Cost: None
Effect: Allows the use of Voodoo Poison Bugs and Poisons on classes other than Witch Doctor.
Comments: This allows you to use all the Poisoning Skills on other classes, as well as Hundred Step Poison and Poisonous Blood. Costs 15 skill points.

Poison Immunity:
Geared Towards: Anyone with leftover skill points
Damage Base: None
Cast Cost: None
Effect: Reduces magical skill damage taken by a certain percentage.
Comments: A passive skill that will reduce magic attacks used on you.

Pathways: Finding Your Witch Doctor's Direction: - 2.0
Image
Witch Doctor has several different general directions in which it can go, as you can see in the image above. For the most part, your stat build will reflect this direction. Below, several of these pathways are given. Please note that the Hybrid mindsets involve two of the below, so you must mix and match the following builds. Creativity is key for this.

Attack Speed: - 2.1

Code: Select all

Damage Output: ..... |||||||||| (10) Maximum
MP Usage: .......... |||| (4) Low
Skill Point Usage: . |||| (4) Low
Reliance on Subs: .. |||||| (6) Mediocre
An attack speed Witch Doctor focuses on dealing as much damage as possible through normal attacks. Most attack speed Witch Doctor's use Aim or Lash Out to increase their attack speed. Below are the most important skills for an attack speed build.

Martial Hex: Must have; increases normal attack power.
Blood Boil: Must have; increases attack and magic attack.
Agony Bug: Recommended; increases normal attack power dealt.
Sanctuary Scarab: Recommended for HP and MP recovery.
Withered Earth: Optional; increases damage dealt.

Attack speed focuses on three main things: attack speed, attack power, and critical hits. The higher each of these factors are, the more effective you will be. This results in the importance of your stat build, which should be based on the following:

Power for attack
Dexterity for accuracy and critical hits
Agility for reduced cooldown time on subbed buffs

For more information on Witch Doctor stats, look down to the Stat Points section.

Pros of Attack Speed Builds:
Minimal MP use
Minimal skill points used

Cons of Attack Speed Builds:
Aim and Lash Out almost required
Lack of Sub skill slots
Weaker First Aid and self healing skills due to no Wisdom

Magic Based: - 2.2

Code: Select all

Damage Output: ..... ||||||||| (9) Very High
MP Usage: .......... ||||||| (7) Fairly High
Skill Point Usage: . |||||||||| (10) Maximum
Reliance on Subs: .. |||||||| (8) High
A magic based Witch Doctor focuses on skill spamming. Luckily, Witch Doctor has a multitude of skills for you to choose from on this, but you can also opt to sub Shaman and Wizard skills thanks to Wand being a default weapon for Witch Doctor in our version :) . Obviously, skill spamming requires large amounts of MP and Magic Attack, so your build again is very important. You should base your build on the following skills from Witch Doctor:

Blood Boil: Highly recommended; increases your magic attack power.
Liquid Venom: Recommended; magic based attack.
Explosive Bug: Recommended; magic and physical based, strong attack.
Sanctuary Scarab: Recommended; MP and HP recovery boosted.
Souleater Bug: Optional; fixed damage for damage output.
Withered Earth: Optional; increases damage output.

For stats, you'll generally want some of the below. Your damage is based on magic attack, cast time/cooldown time, and magic accuracy (optional).

Wisdom for Magic Attack
Agility for lower cooldown times and cast times
Dexterity for Magic Accuracy (Mainly for PvP, very optional)

For more information on Witch Doctor stats, look down to the Stat Points section.

Pros of Magic Based Builds:
Massive MP pool
Easy to level with high level Shaman and Wizard skills

Cons of Magic Based Builds:
Like most casters they can be squishy
Requires high level Shaman and Wizard skills for fast leveling
Requires an MP recovery skill
Quickly runs out of skill points

AoE Based: - 2.3

Code: Select all

Damage Output: ..... |||||| (6) Mediocre
MP Usage: .......... |||||||||| (10) Maximum
Skill Point Usage: . |||||||| (8) High
Reliance on Subs: .. ||||||| (7) Fairly High
This is most likely a very unconventional way to level Witch Doctor, but some people are die hard AoE party fans and would like to continue this tradition on Witch Doctor. Luckily for them, there are a few AoEs offered from Witch Doctor, as well as some bonuses that your party will like. Below are some recommended skills:

Blood Boil: Must have; increases your AoE damage.
Poison Fog: Highly recommended; AoE magic attack.
Poisoned Needles: Highly recommended; AoE physical attack.
Sanctuary Scarab: Highly recommended; team HP and MP recovery skill.
Withered Earth: Highly recommended; increases your team's damage output.
Poisonous Blood: Recommended; DPS poison attack.
Poison-Purifying Bug: Recommended if you get Poisonous Blood.
Plant Skill Bug: Optional; its fun to teleport your team members around :p .

You'd be better off going with a Wisdom build, since you'll get additonal MP, and can also sub Fencer, Shaman or Wizard AoEs more effectively. Below, however, are all the stats which you may find useful:

Power for a stronger Poisoned Needles and physical AoEs.
Wisdom for stronger subbed AoEs from Fencer, Shaman or Wizard and Poison Fog. Increases MP pool and MP recovery.
Dexterity for higher Magic Accuracy.
Agility for decreased cooldown times and cast times. Also increases evasion for when you're mobbed.

For more information on Witch Doctor stats, look down to the Stat Points section.

Pros of AoE Builds:
Great farmers
Good MP pool

Cons of AoE Builds:
Stupidly high MP cost on AoEs
You're playing the class in a really unconventional way
Requires a party in order to train; these builds usually cannot solo, or cannot solo as well as solo dedicated builds.
Does not get an AoE from Witch Doctor until level 31, meaning you have to sub AoEs from other classes until you're level 31.

DPS Based: - 2.4

Code: Select all

Damage Output: ..... ||||| (5) Mediocre
MP Usage: .......... ||||| (5) Mediocre
Skill Point Usage: . |||| (4) Low
Reliance on Subs: .. ||| (3) Low
This is a fairly confusing mindset, but is effective to some extent. This build focuses on poison skills and Toxic-Detonating Bug. Pretty much all you do is poison the opponent, then use Toxic-Detonating Bug for instant damage. It is fairly effective, but it is best to incorporate aspects from either the attack speed or magic based builds to increase your damage output. This can also be placed into magic or attack speed builds for additional damage. Below are the most important skills:

Toxic-Detonating Bug: Must have for instant damage poisons.
Stalling Poison: Highly recommended; poisoning skill.
Hundred Step Poison: Recommended; poisoning skill.
Bloodthirsty Bug: Optional; weaker poisoning skill, more for damage.
Liquild Venom: Optional; poisoning skill, more for damage.
Poison Strike: Optional; poisoning skill, more for damage.
Sanctuary Scarab: Optional; helpful for MP and HP recovery.
Withered Earth: Optional and only useful if you're using an attack speed or magic based build as well.

For a DPS based build, you really don't need any stats, but you will if you want to survive better and use an attack speed or magic based build. Below are the stats you may find useful:

Power for attack speed build aspects.
Physique for HP recovery and additional HP. Only useful if you just go DPS.
Wisdom for higher magic attack for magic build aspects.
Agility for cooldown and cast time reduction. Highly recommended to get to 103.
Dexterity for accuracy and magic accuracy, as well as critical rate for attack speed build aspects.

Pros of DPS Builds:
Easy to operate when you understand what to do
Only really needs two skills; the rest is optional.

Cons of DPS Builds:
Kind of repetitive
Not as effective as the other builds. This is why its recommended to use other builds in combination with this.

Physical Based: - 2.5

Code: Select all

Damage Output: ..... ||||||| (7) Fairly High
MP Usage: .......... ||||||| (7) Fairly High
Skill Point Usage: . ||||||||| (9) High
Reliance on Subs: .. ||||||| (7) Fairly High
A Physical Witch Doctor takes advantage of the physical skills offered in the game, as well as the physical Witch Doctor skills. Luckily, most of the skills offered for Witch Doctor come in a physical form as well. You can also work this into an Attack Speed based build for more damage. You should base your build on the following:

Wisdom for MP Pool (Non-conventional. Worse Attack growth than Power)
Agility for lower cooldown times and cast times
Dexterity for Magic Accuracy (Mainly for PvP, very optional)
Power for Attack (Will make up the majority of your build)

For more information on Witch Doctor stats, look down to the Stat Points section.

For skills, you have several options from Witch Doctor. Below are the most important ones.

Blood Boil: Highly recommended; increases your attack power.
Poison Strike: Recommended; physical based attack.
Bloodthirsty Bug: Recommended; quick casting and very short cooldown.
Explosive Bug: Recommended; magic and physical based, strong attack.
Sanctuary Scarab: Recommended; MP and HP recovery boosted.
Souleater Bug: Optional; fixed damage for damage output.
Agony Bug: Optional; boosts fixed damage attacks.
Withered Earth: Optional; increases damage output.

Click here to learn more information about the recommended physical Witch Doctor skills.

Pros of Physical Based Builds:
Easy to level with high level Thief or other physical class skills
More sub class options are available than Magic based builds

Cons of Physical Based Builds:
Bad MP pool without Wisdom
Requires high level subs to be effective
Witch Doctor is considered a "caster", and will have bad penalties on subbed physical classes

Skill Hybrid: - 2.6

Code: Select all

Damage Output: ..... ||||||||| (9) Very High
MP Usage: .......... ||||||| (7) Fairly High
Skill Point Usage: . |||||||||| (10) Maximum
Reliance on Subs: .. ||||| (5) Mediocre
A hybrid Witch Doctor in a way gets to best of both worlds. Many of Witch Doctor's skills are either magic or physical based, so with this build you can take them all. Below are some of the recommended skills for a skill based Witch Doctor.

Blood Boil: Must have; increases attack and magic attack.
Agony Bug: Recommended; increases power of Souleater Bug and deals damage.
Bloodthirsty Bug: Recommended; magic and fixed attack with a quick cooldown.
Liquid Venom: Recommended; magic based attack.
Poison Strike: Recommended; physical based attack.
Explosive Bug: Recommended; magic and physical based, strong attack.
Sanctuary Scarab: Recommended; MP and HP recovery boosted.
Souleater Bug: Optional; fixed damage for damage output.
Withered Earth: Optional; increases damage output.

Hybrid skill based Witch Doctors focus on three main things: attack, cast time/cooldown and magic attack. The higher each of these factors are, the more damage you will be able to deal over time. This results in the importance of your stat build, which should be based on the following:

Power for attack
Dexterity for magic accuracy
Agility for reduced cooldown time and cast time
Wisdom for larger MP pool, magic defense and magic attack (see tip below)

TIP: All classes have a base Magic Attack and Magic Defense that increases when you level. For example, at level 61 Witch Doctor I have 128 Magic Attack and 130 Magic Defense with no gear on and no Wisdom. Use this to your advantage!

For more information on Witch Doctor stats, look down to the Stat Points section.

Pros of Hybrid Builds:
Reliance of subs can be lowered if you have sufficient MP recovery (sanctuary scarab)
Able to sub both physical and magic classes, or classes that mix both (Musician, Fencer, etc.)

Cons of Hybrid Builds:
Very high skill point usage
Overall lower attack and Magic Attack than physical and magic dedicated Witch Doctors
Very high MP usage

Stat Points: - 3.0
Here are estimated gain for each attribute per stat. Credits go to Charon91 for compiling this. The original thread is http://forums.aeriagames.com/viewtopic.php?t=434614.

Power: +2.14 Attack
Physique: +0.33 Defense, + 0.13 Magic Defense, + 6 HP
Wisdom: +1.33 Attack, +0.53 Magic Attack, +0.33 Magic Defense, + 2.2 MP
Agility: +1 Attack, +0.73 Evasion, +0.27 Magic Evasion
Dexterity: +1.46 Accuracy, +0.2 Magic Attack, +0.27 Magic Accuracy, +0.2 Critical
Durability: +0.93

NOTE: HP and MP are not linear, meaning over time Wisdom and Physique will increase HP and MP by a larger amount. There is not a very significant difference, however.

An interesting tip is that all classes gain Magic Attack and Magic Defense as they level (it is a base stat). For example, my level 61 Witch Doctor with no gear or wisdom has 128 Magic Attack and 130 Magic Defense!

Stats Analysis: - 3.1

Common misconceptions about Witch Doctor include that WD is like a Thief with magic capability. This is not true, due to the low Evasion growth from Agility. Power is also one of Witch Doctor's dominant stats, despite being one of the lowest when your Witch Doctor is level 10.

Witch Doctors also have fairly above average growth for Magic Evasion; useful in PvP, mainly.

Wisdom is probably Witch Doctor's most valuable stat; granting good Magic Attack as well as Attack.

Closing Words: - 5.0
Hope I've provided some direction and insight into this amazing class, and helped you get a better grasp on what this class is all about. What I have provided here is just some background information on some of the skills, basic builds and features of this class. The rest is in your hands.

Remember to think outside to box and experiment. Cookie cut may be the easiest way to go, but it the more effort you put in to making your Witch Doctor truly yours, it will become that: a Witch Doctor you can be proud of.

So enough reading, go out there and train :o (thanks for reading though).

This is a new section designed to help mix and match different skill combinations to put into your build. If you'd like to recommend something, feel free to post them in this thread as well. They will be added to this list if they seem good.

Agony Bug + Martial Hex
Recommended For: Attack Speed, DPS focused builds.
How it Works: Agony Bug and Martial Hex combined allow your normal attack damage to be increased by a high percentage. This is one of the few, if not the only class that has skills like this.

Agony Bug + Souleater Bug
Recommended For: Attack Speed or Physical/Magic skill focused builds.
How it Works: Agony Bug increases fixed damage attacks, while Souleater Bug reduces the target's Magic Attack for 20 seconds and deals fixed damage. Attack Speed users might like this for the Magic Attack reduction, and to use the full advantage from Agony Bug.

Stalling Poison + Toxic-Detonating Bug
Recommended For: DPS builds
How it Works: Stalling Poison lasts for a fairly long time and is the strongest poisoning skill at lower levels. By using Toxic-Detonating Bug, you can dish out some fairly decent damage.

Poisonous Blood + Poison-Purifying Bug
Recommended For: AoE builds
How it Works: Poisonous Blood poisons yourself as well as the surrounding opponents. By using Poison-Purifying Bug, you remove your self poison and recover a fairly large amount of HP. The downside to this is all your Blood Boils -- if you have them -- will be removed.

Poison-Purifying Bug + Pets/Bug Summons
Recommended For: Poison farming for skills that require Poisons
How it Works: Poison-Purifying Bug removes your Blood Boils. By using it on a pet or bug summon, you save your buffs.

[more to come soon, including inter-class combinations!]
